Bar Marsella, the oldest bar in Barcelona

Bar Marsella is maybe the oldest operating bar in Barcelona having been first noted in 1820. Also known locally as the “Absinthe bar”, absinthe is its signature drink and it is still served in the traditional way. It has never had a refit or been renovated and looks like it has hardly been cleaned either in all those years, but the dust and the cobwebs and the sawdust on the floor somehow add to its charm. Frequented by everyone from Picasso to Hemingway over the years, it retains its original identity and is just as raucous now as I’m sure it was then. Don’t bother turning up too early. It only really livens up after midnight.

Casa Almirall, one of the oldest bar in Barcelona which is proper old school!

Casa Almirall was opened in 1860 by a family of the same name and can rightly claim to be one of the oldest operating bars in Barcelona. Originally it was a wine shop by day and became a bar at night. Its antique interior and decoration have been preserved and it is a rare example of the bohemian architectural style of the late 19th century in Catalonia. A favourite of the locals for generations, and more recently tourists who are in the know, it still serves a traditionally made vermouth, known as Oliveta, alongside locally sourced wines and spirits. Casa Almirall is proper old school and gives you a real blast from the past.

Bar muy buenas, another of the best oldest bar in Barcelona with amazing Cocktails and tapas!

Bar Muy Buenas was first recorded in 1904 as a fishmongers selling salted cod (bacalao). By 1928 it had transformed into a bohemian watering hole in a modernist style, typical of the time. Over the years it suffered some decline but the new owners have restored many of its old features whilst incorporating some contemporary modern decor as well. They’ve done a good job and its hard to tell the old from the new. The bar serves a wide range of locally sourced drinks plus cocktails and international choices. They also have an extensive tapas menu that uses seasonal and local products.

London Bar, feel the circus in one of the best oldest bar in town!

First opened in 1910, London Bar has always been associated with performers and artists, especially those from the circus. Frequented over the years by luminaries such as Picasso, Gaudi, Miro and Hemingway, it has thankfully kept its original interior which means when you step through the door you step back in time. Indulge in a vermouth or a gin and tonic, and imagine the bustle and hum, the smoke and the noise of the eclectic clientele. Hear echoes of the debate and discourse, challenging and inspiring. Hemingway famously said that “time is the least thing we have of”. At London Bar you will definitely get value for your time.
